The College of Life Science and Technology at HUST was founded in 1980 from the Department of Bioengineering. Currently, the College has seven academic departments including Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of Biophysics and Molecular Physiology, Department of Nanomedicine and Biopharmaceuticals and Department of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, and a Teaching Center for Laboratory, one core research facility and a management office of the college.

The College emphasizes education and research in the cross-disciplines of basic science, engineering and medicine. It has the biomedical engineering as the national key discipline, the biophysics as the national priority program and the biology as the key discipline of Hubei Province. The College has been playing a key role in HUST in the research areas of biochemistry and biology, molecular biology and genetics, pharmacology and toxicology and agriculture sciences, which are ranked in the top 1% by international ESI.

The College comprises two national key disciplines, biomedical engineering and biology. It has a complete curriculum program from Bachelor degree to Master and Ph.D. degrees and also a post-doctoral training station in the two national key disciplines. The Ph.D. program includes areas in biomedical engineering, biomedical photonics, bioinformatics, biomaterials and tissue engineering, biopharmaceutical engineering, genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology, ecology and botany. The master of science program includes areas in biomedical engineering, biomedical photonics, bioinformatics, biomaterials and tissue engineering, bio-pharmaceutical engineering, botany, biochemistry, genetics, biophysics, microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, ecology, and crop genetics and breeding. To meet the urgent need of talents in frontier research in life science and industrialization, the College has five undergraduate majors in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, bioinformatics, biological science and biopharmaceutical engineering. For the teaching excellence, the college has the National Training Center for Life Science and Technology and the National Training Center for Basic Science and Teaching. To emphasizes the competitive talents with international and cross-disciplinary visions, the College has established a special class of basic biological science and technology in Qiming College, a talent class for distinguished engineer in biomedical engineering, a class of innovative learning in BGI Institute and a Bei Shizhang elite class by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The college has a current enrollment of 2029 students including 1201 undergraduate students, 383 MS and 379 PhD students, and 155 international graduate students.

The college has a first-class faculty, of which a majority have oversea experiences and are below 45 years. There are 148 full-time faculty members, 58 full professors and 45 associate professors with Ph.D. degree. The faculty includes 2 members of American Association for the Advancement of Science, 5 in National Thousands of People Plan, 5 Yangtze River Distinguished Scholars and National Distinguished Junior Scientists, 3 National Distinguished Young Scientists, 9 in National Thousands of Youth Plan, 1 awarded as the National Distinguished Young Scholar, 2 in National Plan of Young Talents, 14 as the Ministry of Education Cross-century Excellent Talents, 12 Hubei Chutian scholars and 2 Outstanding Teachers of Hubei Province. In addition, there are 1 research team recognized nationally as the Innovative Leading Teams by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, 1 national level teaching team, 1 training base of 111 Plan by the Minister of Education and 2 research teams as the Innovative Leading Teams by Hubei Province. The College has also recruited a number of renown adjunct professors oversea and from business.

The college has a high emphasis on the collaboration oversea in research as well as student exchange programs such as United States, Sweden, Germany, Britain, Russia and Australia. Within the college, there are annual forums for MS students and conferences for Ph.D. candidates, cross-disciplinary innovative forums and multiple research salons. The college also invites well-known scientists and researchers to hold both domestic and international meetings.

With the asset over 79 million yuan, the college is aiming to train the outstanding talents with confidence and lead innovative researches and applications in the highly integrated cross-discipline of basic and applied science, engineering and medicine to stay at the forefront of science and to address major national demands for social and economic growth.
