Dear teachers, classmates, alumni, friends：
Today is the New Year's Day. On behalf of more than 2500 students and faculty members at the College of Life Science & Technology at HUST, we would like to wish you a very happy and joyful New Year!
Over the past 40 years, we have witnessed the transformation of the College from Department of Bioengineering in 1980 to the establishment of College of Life Science & Technology in 1999.
Now the College has gathered numerous outstanding faculty members and new generations of pioneers in life sciences that include 8 working units as Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Biological Sciences，Department of Biotechnology, Department of Nanopharmaceutics &Biopharmaceutics, Department of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, Experimental Teaching Center, Public platform for Scientific Research and Office of the Party and Government, etc. There are 6 directions for the future: Biophysics and Sensory Biology, MechanoNanoMedicine & Intelligent Biomaterials, Translational Geneticomedicine on Mendelian Disease, Synthetic Biology & Smart Biomanufacture, BioBigData & AI Technology.
In the recent program appraisal by the Ministry of Education of China (MOE) in 2017, the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Program at the College is ranked 1st (A+) and the Biology Program is ranked 9th (A-) in China. An independent International External Review Committee, led by Professor Dennis Discher, one of the most prominent life scientists from University of Pennsylvania and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine in US, states that both of our BME and Biology Programs are outstanding and some subareas are even exceptional in comparison to programs in US, corroborating with the ranking by MOE. These tremendous progress and achievements by the College are testimonies to the fact that our faculty and students have been the best in China.
The College aims to results significantly in scientific research that, nearly 1500 high-level papers have been published by faculty and students in the past 5 years, including 2 papers in Cell , 1 paper in Nature and 2 papers in Science, 3 papers in Nature Materials.
Meanwhile, the College has pushed forward the transformation of scientific results to serve the international livelihood, in which, the Micro-Optical Slice Tomography System is the leading domestically; The national research center for nanomedicine engineering technology is committed to promoting the transformation of nanomedicine technology achievements and supporting the leapfrog development of China's biomedical industry. The ultrasonic laboratory has developed the first set of ultrasonic CT system prototype for breast cancer detection in China, and established an industrial alliance of specialized labor division of domestic ultrasonic equipment. The construction of the “All Digital PET” industry chain has broken the industrial monopoly of international high-end medical apparatus and instruments; Exploit the new path of the replacement of fossil energy, develop the New Technology for Preparation of Coupled High Valued Biodiesel by Compound Enzyme, which generated the economic benefit by hundreds of millions yuan; To innovate Ramie Biology Degumming New Technology, that has promoted tens of thousands of jobs.
The College positively creates the international training system for innovative talent by jointly setting up the “Bei Shizhang Talents Class” HUST-UCAS in 2013 and explored the “DengFeng Talents Class” BSc to PhD in 2019.
Life science is one of the most active disciplines in the 21st century. This year, the College of Life Science & Technology, HUST will usher in its 40th anniversary. It is the New Celebration of our striving forward for another milestone. All talents are presenting here for the flourishing age as promised. We welcome you and your family to come back often to visit us and to recall your impressed good memories at HUST.
Finally, we wish you and your loved ones a happy, prosperous and peaceful 2020!
