摘要:A major challenge in tissue engineering is the design of scaffolds that can mimic the structure and biological functions of the natural extracellular matrix. As such, the biomaterial of choice must be biocompatible, biodegradable and allow cellular attachment, migration and proliferation. In addition the biomaterial should be organized, possess the appropriate mechanical properties and provide physical support to the cells as remodeling takes place. In this study, several of these factors have been explored using electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibers stabilized and functionalized using ion implantation. Our results demonstrated the effect of fiber organization on cell behavior and that ion implantation is an effective method to improve fiber stability and cell compatibility which are important factors for a successful tissue engineering process.
