On the morning of July 3rd, the weather was cloudy, but it turned clear later. The day's journey began with a delicious and hearty breakfast. After breakfast, Professor Janek introduced us to the basics of Fontainebleau Forest. He presented us with fifteen questions about the forest, and we were divided into groups to search for information and answer them. Additionally, Professor Janek asked each group to come up with their own questions about Fontainebleau Forest. Through this independent exploration and problem-solving process, we deepened our understanding of the beautiful and biodiverse forest while also becoming aware of its hidden dangers. Being well-informed about Fontainebleau Forest made us even more excited for the orienteering and water sample collection planned for the next day.
Afterward, Sylvain guided us through the teaching building, familiarizing us with the layout and necessary attention. Then, he led us to the laboratories where we would later conduct water quality testing, specifically the physical-chemical properties, microbiology, and molecule testing labs.
In the afternoon, our group, led by a guide, headed to the heart of France—Paris. As we walked through the streets, bathed in the fragmented sunset light and the gentle breeze, we observed the city's details and elegance for the first time. Paris is a city rich in history, with every sight being a relic and every sound telling a story. From the ancient gardens of the nobility to the solemn July Revolution Monument and various other landmarks, the city vividly illustrated its past and hinted at its future.
With the French guide, we visited famous Parisian landmarks such as the July Revolution Monument, the statue of Louis XIV, and the Church of Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis. Standing in front of the July Revolution Monument, we deeply felt the power of historical change. In 1830, the French people successfully overthrew the despotic rule of Charles X and reestablished a bourgeois republic. This revolution marked France's path towards modernization, breaking free from monarchical despotism and starting a new historical chapter. Reflecting on history, it becomes clear that any societal change requires the participation and effort of the people. The victory of the July Revolution proved the French people's firm determination to pursue freedom and democracy. They stood against tyranny, defending their ideals with their lives, writing a grand historical chapter.
The road ahead is not smooth, but only by inheriting the wishes of the revolutionary predecessors and persistently pursuing progress can we create a better future. Without insights obtained from history, it is difficult to hold the future direction. We should study world history, draw wisdom from it, and infuse new momentum into China's development.
Finally, we had some free time for city walk. We immersed ourselves in the local atmosphere, enjoying French cuisine and unique street culture. Walking through the streets, we saw unique graffiti, enthusiastic Black tap dancers, and the towering spire of the Notre-Dame Cathedral under reconstruction. Eating crispy croissants and creamy ice cream and browsing through various souvenir shops—all these elements together formed a unique and impressive cityscape.
In the evening, we went out with our French classmates Fatma, Evelyne, and Ines to Le Spot mall, visiting the Arcade Room to experience French leisure and entertainment. There, we tried various games, including familiar ones like curling and basketball shooting machines, as well as uniquely French ones like a small bullfighter ring and bowling. This special team-building activity not only strengthened our friendships but also let us feel the relaxed and leisurely French romance.
